In the olden days, bathing, for most of the population, was rare. Today, many people bathe on a daily basis in chlorinated water. Chlorine is shipped as a liquid in steel bottles or tank cars. In 1781 the British chemist Henry Cavendish synthesized water by detonating a mixture of hydrogen and air. Blood in animals and sap in plants consist largely of water and serve to transport food and remove waste material.

Several processes are being developed to produce fresh water cheaply. Because this chemical contains no halogens, the water contains no chloroamine odor and is less harsh on sensitive skin and eyes.
